Pat Sajak set the Internet abuzz Thursday after admitting that he and co-host Vanna White used to get a little loaded before taping “Wheel of Fortune.”
The 65-year-old came clean during an appearance on “Dan Le Batard Is Highly Questionable,” which airs on ESPN 2 (watch the interview here).
When asked if he ever hosted the show while intoxicated, he confessed with a laugh, “Yes, when I first started and was much younger and could tolerate those things. We had a different show then.”
During the breaks between taping, Sajak and White would swing by the Mexican restaurant across the street for some margaritas.
“Vanna and I would … have two or three or six [margaritas] and then come and do the last shows and have trouble recognizing the alphabet.”
So is he still hosting under the influence? The host insists those days are all in the past and we’re watching a sober Sajak.
“Now, if I were to inhale the cork and a bottle of wine, I would probably keel over. I’m getting a little older for this. So we don’t do that. I would be hesitant to have anything to drink now.”
I, for one, am not surprised. There’s really no other explanation for his tireless enthusiasm for a game show that is essentially adult hangman.
