Homemade Wrinkle Lotion
Commercial wrinkle lotions range in price and effectiveness. The products, while often viewed as necessary, sometimes contain unpronounceable ingredients that cause skin irritation and redness. Making your own lotion to treat wrinkles solves many of the problems experienced with purchased products. You will know exactly what went into the lotion, as well as the safety and effectiveness of the ingredients all while saving money.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles have several causes. While fine lines and loss of elasticity come naturally with age, the conditions can accelerate with poor skin care. A primary cause of skin wrinkles occurs due to sun damage. Other causes include diet, dehydration, exposure to pollutants and lack of proper skin care. To treat wrinkles already developed, homemade lotions work more effectively when combined with preventative methods. Keeping your skin clean, hydrated and protected from the sun will go a long way in preventing further wrinkles.
Ingredients
Specific ingredients for homemade wrinkle creams vary based on your other needs. Some basics, however, should make your homemade lotion an effective wrinkle treatment. Many ingredients are available through natural or herb supply stores. Specialty ingredients might prove harder to find, but make the lotion more powerful at treating wrinkles. Some basic ingredients include aloe, vitamin C, green tea, rose hip seed oil, vitamin E and grape seed extract. For ingredients specifically for wrinkles, look for hyaluronic acid, coenzyme Q10, copper peptides and vitamin A or retinol.
Process
Making homemade lotion requires a few extra steps to achieve a smooth, creamy consistency. The oils and waters should be close to equal in amount. For example, if you have a combined cup of water and aloe gel, you would also use a similar amount of oils and butters. The oils and water will mix best at room temperature. Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar recommends slowly blending the water into the oils until you reach a creamy consistency. You can also purchase plain base lotions and add your own anti-aging ingredients.
Application
While many companies and product lines promote specific lotions and creams for different areas of the face, one will work just fine. Use the homemade lotion for wrinkles all over your face and neck, even on your hands, if needed. If you prefer a thicker lotion, it might be best to apply it in the evening. A lighter lotion base will work under makeup and for daytime wear.
Warnings
Products used on your skin, especially in delicate areas, should be patch tested first for allergic reactions. This applies to homemade or premade products. If you have any skin conditions, you should check with your dermatologist or primary care provider on the safety of any ingredients before using a product.
