SMILING IT FORWARD™ Through First Steps

November 3, 2014 by Guest Writer Leave a Comment

This blog was written by Megan at HousewifeOnAMission – make sure to check her out her blog!

The following post is sponsored by TYLENOL®.

I will never forget those first steps my daughter took all on her own. I remember exactly where I was sitting and where my daughter was standing–along side the couch. She gave me the biggest smile and kept her eyes on me every single step she took, which was exactly 6 steps. I remember how excited I was – quickly hugging her and doing a happy dance with her. I then quickly called her daddy, both Grandmas and my best friend. Those first steps easily replay in my mind over and over, and I hope I never lose that precious memory.

That following weekend, my husband and I headed to the mall to buy our daughter her first pair of walking shoes because she needed them to master walking and the soon-to-come running. Since our daughter was our first child, every milestone our daughter reached was a first, and this one was definitely one of the most exciting ones for her to reach. Some family and friends may have called me and my husband “helicopter mom and helicopter dad”, but even so, we couldn’t always be there to catch our daughter when she would fall over. There were so many times our little girl would get excited when seeing something in the distance and just had to get to it as quickly as she could to touch/hold/catch “it” (whatever “it” was). So naturally, she would run to “it” and tumble along the way. Learning to walk has it’s up and downs (literally- hah!) and so while it was so amazing to see our daughter learn how to walk, it was also nerve-racking as we were always so worried she would fall and hurt herself. Of course, she did fall and hurt herself. But no matter what, my daughter would be determined and would get right back up. And, and you know what? She always had a smile on her face, because she knew how big she was and how fun it was to take those baby steps!
