Quick Energy Foods

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

The best quick energy foods are a combination of protein and complex carbohydrates. Stock up your shelves with a good selection of these options. They’re not only quick to give you energy but they’re also quick to prepare. You will be able to fuel your body with a balanced and healthy snack even when you are in a hurry, which means you’ll feel better, stay more alert and able to tackle that long to-do list.

Smoked Salmon and Whole Grain Bagel Chips

A great high protein option, smoked salmon provides the good fats you need in your body and lots of vitamin D, B6, B12, as well as calcium and magnesium.
Have a few ounces with some whole grain bagel chips, and your body will have plenty of complex carbs to fuel it for an extended time. The proteins will keep you energized and build your muscles.

Banana and Almonds

Bananas give you the complex carbohydrates, and a handful of almonds alongside gives you that protein. It’s also a nice sweet and salty combination for the taste buds. If you don’t like bananas, try a fresh peach, cherries, or grapes instead. Cashews, pecans and walnuts are other good options instead of almonds.

Apple and Cheese

You can make this snack incredibly fast to grab on your way out the door by keeping cheese sticks in your refrigerator. Keep the cheese low-fat, if you want to avoid too many calories. Great apple choices are Fuji, Gala and Granny Smith.

Fresh Figs and Yogurt

You may only be able to find fresh figs when they are in season. They are full of fiber and natural sugar, and taste great alongside a bowl of low-fat vanilla yogurt. This combination provides a good helping of protein and calcium. If you can’t find fresh figs, look for dried Black Mission figs. Chop a few and stir into your yogurt.

Whole Grain Toast and a Protein Topping

Keep a loaf of whole grain bread on hand, and you’ve always got a few options for a quick energy snack. Top a toasted piece with peanut butter (or any nut butter), cream cheese, a slice of cheese, or enjoy with a fried egg for a great quick-energy breakfast that will last you through the morning.
