Hairstyling Tips for Curly Hair

June 24, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

When you have curly hair, you probably get a lot of compliments. After all, women pay money to have perms applied so their hair can look like yours does naturally. While you may get compliments on your naturally curly hair, you may find it can be difficult to style and keep under control. Make sure your curly hair always looks its best.

Gel Works

If you want to make sure your curls stay loose and elegant–not frizzy and wild–use a bit of hair gel to keep them in place. Apply the gel and work it through the entire head of hair. Then, if you flip your head over and scrunch it all over from underneath to the top, it will provide a carefree overall impression that is carefully casual.

Rollers Provide Bounce

To get your hair to bounce freely as you walk, you need to invest in some rollers. Electric hot rollers will get the job done in a matter of minutes. Once the rollers are hot you can roll your hair and leave the rollers in for 10 to 15 minutes. Once you remove the curlers, let the curls cool down for another five minutes before attempting to style it. This provides strength to the curl as you go through your day or evening.

Caring for Curls

Washing your hair every day can cause it to dry out, according to the Aveda website. Instead, wash it every two to three days, and let your scalp’s natural oils provide moisture on the off days. In addition, running your hands through your hair too often can make it frizzy, so once you have styled it, leave it alone.

Put It Up

On days that you don’t have time to style your hair, you can sweep it up, put a ribbon in it and look like you worked all morning on getting it ready. Whether you pull it up into a high -on-head ponytail or braid it in the back, leaving several curly strands loose just in front of your ears, curly hair tends to look finished even when it isn’t, so this style works well.

Ban the Brush

According to the Great Hairstyle Tips website, if you have curly hair you should almost never use a brush on your hair. The brush bristles can cause your hair to frizz; therefore, it is recommended that you use a wide-toothed comb instead. Using the highest blow drying setting will also make your curls become frizzy. While drying and styling those beautiful curls, plan to start styling early enough to take the time to use the low setting.
