Do-It-Yourself Birthday Party Themes

Kids and adults alike love a fully thought-out party. When every detail is taken care of and wrapped in a theme, the party feels satisfying and exciting. Although you could stop by the local party store to buy everything for a party, you can also pull it together with items that you have at home. Put on a party that reflects your birthday girl or boy.

Decorations

With a computer and printer, you can create birthday signs and decorations that fit the theme. Print out pictures of the main character or scenes of the theme with a “Happy Birthday” message emblazoned on the page and hang the sign in the center of the room. Borrow or use your own authentic pieces, such as saddles for a cowboy theme or tires for a race-car theme.

Construction

If you have some cardboard boxes sitting around the house, paint them and cut them strategically to make items for your themed birthday. Large boxes can be taped together and carved into castles for princess themes or ships for pirate themes. Small boxes can be treasure chests, race cars or sports goals.

Costumes

Although clowns are the stereotypical birthday guest, you can invite a friend or family member to dress up to fit your theme. Animal costumes of various types fit into jungle, zoo, sea, desert or other animal themes. Cowboys and ranchers are great for western themes, while fairy godmothers are delightful for princess or fairy themes. Have your costumed guest interact with kids, hand out prizes and snacks, or wheel in the cake or presents.

Food

Make your food match your theme with clever names. Trail mix can be versatile as animal munchies, fairy dust, pirate booty, cowboy mix or rock star treats. Decorate your cake to look like your theme, by painting a design on the top with pastry bags full of icing or printing edible pictures and placing them on the cake.

Practical Pieces

Look around the house with a creative eye, and you may well find items that you can use and that will fit with the theme. Toy boxes may be full of dump trucks that are great for a construction theme and will hold napkins, favors or noisemakers. Crowns for princess themes or toy boats for water themes also serve this purpose. Keep an eye out for pails, buckets, bowls, cups and other containers that you can tuck into the party to highlight the theme.
