30 Minute Happiness Boost!

More and more it seems like raising your happiness is a long term ambition. There are books and books about how to increase your level of happiness. Trust me, I have many of them on my bookshelf. I am actually reading The Happiness Project as I write. What I am learning however, is that there are things you can do right now that will bring about feelings of happiness. It is great to have long term goals, but it is also important to commit to daily action and steps that move you closer to your goal. Instead of making massive life changes to bring about more happiness (leaving a relationship, starting a new career, moving to a new home for example) you can commit to very simple 30 minute happiness boosters.

1. Take a walk outside

How often do you find yourself stuck inside at the office all day without much fresh air or sunlight? Personally, I get pretty grumpy if I don’t step away from my office and take a daily walk. The clean air and sunshine instantly lifts my mood and energy. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals that improve your mood. Try to get outside every day this week.

2. Get rid of a nagging task

A simple happiness boost is to cross off a task that has been on your mind for a while. Set your timer for 30 minutes and focus on some important to-do’s. Set the Dr appointment. Call the plumber. Take the clothes to Goodwill. Send an invoice. Just the act of completing some tasks will make you feel good.

3. Do a good deed

The easiest way to promote your own happiness is to do something kind for someone else in need. The act of giving to others, whether your time, resources or financial contribution, puts a smile on your face. Focusing on good deeds takes the energy off only thinking about yourself and what is lacking in your life. Do something unexpected for someone else this week.
