What Increases the Female Sex Drive?

If you find that you have a “headache” more and more often in the bedroom and are not interested in having sex very much anymore, that can be distressing for you and your partner. Clinically, this condition has a name–hypoactive sexual desire disorder, according to WebMD. Treatment options exist to help increase the female sex drive.

Estrogen

If you don’t have enough estrogen in your system, your desire for sex will take a nose dive, says Dr. Laura Corio, gynecologist at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Too little estrogen will cause your vaginal tissue to get dry and shrink, making intercourse uncomfortable or painful. Estrogen will help to avoid this from occurring, will elevate your mood and will make sex pleasurable again.

Testosterone

You only need a small amount of testosterone to make your sex drive sizzle, according to WebMD. But if your testosterone levels get of whack, so will your sex drive. The jury is still out as to the safety of the testosterone boosters, such as the patch, according to Dr. Steven Goldstein, professor at the NYU Medical Center in New York City. Many doctors will prescribe testosterone off label, though.

Antidepressant Drugs

Sometimes depression will cause you to lose interest in sex. Taking an antidepressant may make you feel well enough to have sex, but some antidepressants cause loss of lubrication or loss of libido. If that happens, talk to your doctor about switching medications. Some antidepressants do not cause sexual side effects, according to The Pro Health website.

Vitamin E

Putting vitamin E oil on your vagina can increase sensation and can help rehydrate tissue. Do this several times a week, recommends Corio.

Exercise

Exercise could help with your sex drive by enhancing your self-image and by releasing endorphins, chemicals that may pump up your sex drive, according to Go Ask Alice, Columbia University’s Health Internet Service. Yoga, for example, may increase blood flow to the genitals, which increases arousal.

Zestra

Zestra is a blend of botanical oils and extracts that can help with sexual arousal. A controlled trial, published in the 2003 Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, showed that Zestra increased arousal, desire, pleasure and ability to orgasm.

ArginMax

ArginMax is a nutritional supplement that increases sexual desire in woman, according to a study published in the 2001 Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. Discuss taking supplements with your doctor to make sure they will not have side effects or interact badly with any other medicines you may be taking, recommends WebMD.
