Birthday Party Theme Ideas for Little Girls

July 27, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Your daughter’s birthday is fast approaching, and you want to throw her the most amazing party. A simple way to plan and host a birthday party is to choose a theme beforehand and let the theme dictate the party’s food, location and activities. Work with the birthday girl to pick a theme, and plan the best birthday party ever.

Types

Themes for a little girl’s birthday can range from traditionally girly things such as princesses, fairies or butterflies to popular cartoon characters to the unexpected for a little girl, such as construction vehicles or pirates. Consult with your daughter before picking a theme for her party. You may think that she would like a princess-themed party, but she may have decided that she is over princesses and wants a rock ‘n’ roll-themed birthday.

Benefits

Once you have chosen the party’s theme, all the other details seem to fall in place. A themed party limits you to certain decorations and activities, which is a good thing. You won’t have to worry about thinking of fun and creative things to do at the party, as the theme will guide you. For instance, a rock ‘n’ roll birthday party will obviously need some sort of music. Activities such as dancing and karaoke will fit in well with a rock ‘n’ roll theme.

Decorations

Finding plates, cups and other decorations can be easy if you have a theme, particularly if the theme is a popular cartoon or movie character. You may run into trouble if your daughter wants a theme that is less popular or less current, such as a cartoon character that is no longer on the air or no longer hip. If that is the case, you can always try to make your own decorations. You can pick solid color tableware that corresponds to the theme.

Activities

Choose a wide range of activities or stick with one larger one at the birthday party. You can play classic birthday games such as pin the tail on the donkey or musical chairs but change them slightly to fit the theme. If the party is a princess- or fairy-themed party, have the guests come in costume and make a fashion parade the primary activity of the day. You can also host a themed party at a roller rink or bowling alley and incorporate the theme into those activities.

Food

Food can serve as the party’s theme, or it can match the theme of the party. Decorate the birthday cake with the theme or buy a cake that is in the shape of your daughter’s favorite character. Serve snacks that fit in with the theme or make snacks the theme of the event. For instance, you can throw a sundae birthday party for your little girl, where guests build their own elaborate sundaes. Other food themes include a taco- or Tex-Mex themed party, a pizza party or a mini snack food party.
