David Letterman shocked viewers when he confessed on his Late Show Thursday night that he was a victim of an extortion plot for $2 million dollars. Someone tried to blackmail him for having sexual relations with female members of his staff.
A press release stated that three weeks ago Letterman received a package that stated if the host did not pay $2 million then the blackmailer would go public with evidence that the 62-year-old star had sexual activity with his employees.
Letterman confessed to his studio audience and everyone tuning in that “this morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”
He told the jury that he did have sexual relationships with staff members. Although he admitted it would be embarrassing for the news to be made public, he also felt he needed to “protect my family.”
Letterman worked with the Manhattan District Attorney’s special prosecution bureau on a sting operation that included Letterman meeting and giving a counterfeit $2 million check to the alleged extortionist. The authorities arrested the perpetrator Thursday.
Letterman is married to Regina Lasko – they have been together since 1986 and have a son, Harry, who was born in 2003.
David – you did the right thing in the end. I feel so bad for Regina.
