Family Bonds and "Twin Sisters"

I wasn’t sure how to start this review so I’m going to start at the beginning before kids were even an idea in my head. Growing up, I was told I would never have children of my own because of my health. So in turn I never wanted them. I put it in my head that they weren’t something I wanted so as to not set myself up for disappointment. Through my college years and after, my feelings remained the same.

Then, I met Kevin, or more importantly Alana and my life drastically changed almost over night. Of course at first, when I realized he was several years older than me, had been married not once but twice before, and (the biggest kicker) had a daughter, my first instinct was to run in the opposite direction. That wasn’t possible because we just couldn’t stay away from each other and after weeks of dating I was given the opportunity to meet Alana finally. Once I met her – it was a done deal! Alana still claims that I married her Dad solely because of her and she’s right. Well, that is mostly correct.

From our first play date with just the two of us to the opening of the Georgia Aquarium, I knew I was in love (with her). I felt as though this was my sign from the universe that even if I wasn’t to have my own children, I was meant to be a mother. Of course the challenge of raising another person’s child wasn’t going to be easy and my Mother warned me about all the emotions, heartache, and difficult times which could be ahead. I was up for the challenge because I had made up my mind about both Kevin and Alana being a part of my life!

I was excited to get the opportunity to review a special independent film, Twin Sisters, since it was about family, which as you can tell, is such an important piece of my life.

Twin Sisters is A heartfelt story about twins separated at birth through adoption. Although they were brought up on the opposite side of the world, they are still connected. Through their amazing adoptive parents, they are able to stay in touch and continue a relationship as they grow up. It is truly a story of how fate brings people together at the right time and connects us in ways we don’t even realize.

This movie quickly reminded me of the bonding Alana and I had as a new mother and daughter as well as the bonds between Alana and her two brothers (I was able to have two babies with Kevin after we were married).

I can relate to this film in several other ways too. The twins in the movie are raised in different countries speaking different languages and grow up in completely different ways. After Kevin and I were married, we decided to move back to Michigan where I am from. Kevin is a twin AND his twin has a set of twins born months apart from Alana. Having grown up in the South most of their lives, it has been a huge culture shock for Kevin and Elana to transition to the Northern lifestyle. Kevin and his twin brother live two very different lives as adults. Likewise, Alana’s twin cousins have gone through similar milestones, yet are very different because of the areas they have been raised in. Even though there is distance between us now, the sibling bond has never wavered.

While this has been a rough journey for our family, it has also been one of the most rewarding adventures. I am a big believer in “everything happens for a reason,” and this film shows how fate truly plays a role in our lives. Without Alana, my life would have been completely different, yet we met and bonded at the perfect time in both of our lives to have the amazing relationship we currently have. The age difference between her and her brothers plays a role in how well they interact together in addition to all of us as a family. I cannot imagine my life without Alana as I am sure the families of these beautiful twins in the movie feel as well!

Twin Sisters is a movie I would recommend to anyone. The movie will give you the warm fuzzies as you feel the connection between the twins and you’ll definitely be able to relate as you think about the family and friendship bonds in your own life.
