Cool Ponytail Hairstyles

Create a new look with an old friend, the ponytail. Ponytails can give you a different hairstyle without cutting or doing any major alterations to your hair. Try on different styles to suit the occasion, your mood or the weather. Cool ponytails can add visual interest to your hair that is different from the simple and traditional ponytail you grew up with.

Glam Ponytail

Go glamorous with a glam ponytail that you can wear for a special occasion, such as a prom, a wedding or a night out with your friends. The glam ponytail is ideal for wavy hair, but you can use rollers to add waves if you have straight hair.

After washing your hair, do not dry it completely. Create 2-inch sections of hair all around your head, and wrap each section around a roller. Remove the rollers after your hair dries out completely. Then, use your fingers to shake out the waves. Create a low pony by parting your hair in the middle or one side, and then gathering your hair and pulling it back low. Twist up your ponytail, leaving at least 3 inches of hair loose at the ends. Secure the twisted portion against the back of your head using bobby pins. Applying strong-hold hairspray should set the style in place.

Sweep the front section of your parted hair to the other side of your forehead. Make sure that it hangs low. Apply hairspray so it stays in place. The glam part comes when you accessorize using bejeweled combs and pins.

Braided Ponytail

Add texture and depth to our ponytail by creating multiple braids mixed with unbraided hair and tied into ponytail. After washing your hair, dry it completely. Run your fingers through your hair with styling cream. Comb your hair until all the tangles disappear. Part your hair from front to back, leaving some lose hair on the front and both sides of your face. Secure the back part of your hair temporarily with a big hair clip.

Separate the loose hair in 2-inch sections, and then create a mini-braid in each one. Tie each end of each mini-braid with small elastic bands. Once done, remove the temporary hair clip you used to tie the back of your hair. Put the mini-braids and the rest of the hair together and tie into a ponytail. Using an embellished hair band will add visual interest.

Retro Ponytail

Give your look a retro style by donning a retro ponytail. A retro ponytail will give your head height as you create pouf on the crown area. Brush your hair after washing and drying. For maximum effect, add a volumizing hairspray before your style. Part your hair, brushing the front half of your crown area toward the front of your face. Insert a few volumizing hair inserts or barrettes at the center of your crown area. Flip over the front hair to cover the hair comb. Gather your hair together and tie together loosely, using a clear elastic band. Add a bow to complement your outfit. Wear your ponytail sideways so the tail touches your shoulder.
